De provincie ligt het verst van het continent, krijgt de eerste klap van Atlantische zonneschijn na een front, en heeft door de extreme open kustlijn een sterke en aanhoudende zeebries. 2. Hollandse kust en Wadden (1800-1850 zonuren)

Van Hoek van Holland en Maasvlakte tot Den Helder en de Wadden vormt de Hollandse kuststrook een lange zonnige strook. Hoek van Holland scoort vaak 1800-1830, Den Helder en Texel iets hoger. De Waddeneilanden Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland en Schiermonnikoog zitten in dezelfde categorie, met de bonus van zeer schone lucht (lage aerosol-belasting).

3. Zuid-Limburg (1750-1800 zonuren)

De enige binnenlandregio die met de kust kan concurreren. Roosendaal, Bergen op Zoom en de Zeeuws-Brabantse grensstreek profiteren van zowel een zuidelijke ligging als nabijheid van zee. Statistisch iets minder zonnig dan de directe kust maar wel meer dan de Randstad.

5. Randstad-buitenrand (1700-1750 zonuren)

Steden zoals Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Leiden en Haarlem zitten rond het landelijk gemiddelde. Direct aan de duinen (Zandvoort, Bloemendaal aan Zee) loopt het op tot 1800; landinwaarts (Utrecht-stad, Amersfoort) zakt het naar 1700.

6. Drenthe en Friesland (1700 zonuren)

Waarom de kust meer zon krijgt: drie mechanismen

• Minder convectie — boven het koelere zeeoppervlak vormen zich minder stapelwolken dan boven het opgewarmde land. Een rondrit op een zomermiddag laat dat zien: heldere lucht boven de kust, zware cumuluswolken boven de Brabantse Kempen.

Zeeland has been at the top of the KNMI statistics for years. The province lies furthest from the continent, gets the first burst of Atlantic sunshine after a front, and thanks to its extremely open coastline has a strong and persistent sea breeze. 2. Dutch coast and Wadden (1800-1850 sun hours)

5. Randstad outer edge (1700-1750 sun hours)

Cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Leiden and Haarlem sit around the national average. Right by the dunes (Zandvoort, Bloemendaal aan Zee) it climbs to 1800; further inland (central Utrecht, Amersfoort) it drops to 1700.
